Why does it feel so fast when you’re driving a kart?
Why does 50 mph in a kart, feel so much faster than 50 mph in a road car on the motorway?
F1 drivers often say that karting is one of the closest things to actually driving an F1 car -- but how is this possible if kart is travelling at a third of the speed?
Well, today, I’m going over the science to explain why karting feels so quick -- and I’m writing the morning after a karting session.

So, what would designers actually do if the goal is to ...
The MADNESS of Formula E Cars
Просмотров 297 тыс.14 дней назад
Formula E racing is intense. There are hundreds of overtakes per race, lap-long side-by-side battles, massive lunges for position, and, yes, the odd crash. And-as I found out when I drove one-the cars are a bit of a handful. But really, Formula E takes what’s best about old-school racing-challenging circuits, not that much aerodynamic grip-not that much mechanical grip either-and combines it wi...

Is Formula E Harder Than F1?
Просмотров 290 тыс.Месяц назад
I’ve been lucky enough to drive both Formula 1 and Formula E cars. I’ve driven F1 cars all the way from the early 80s, all the way up to the mid-2010s. And a few weeks ago, I drove a Formula E car for the first time. But, how are they different? And which one would be the most challenging to race? Well, my answer might surprise you. Well, I wanted to take a look at the differences between F1 an...

*"When Ford put the money up for two British engineers (Mike Costin & Keith Duckworth) to design the most successful engine ever to race in Formula 1"
missed an opportunity when talking about jerk to make the joke that it's the rate at which your mates mood changes as he consumes drinks over the course of the night 🤣
3g in gokarts without aero? Hell nah, slightly over 1.5 at most.
'But, there's more' - brilliant!
This is an awesome video; I love all the crazy different designs. Polar opposite to the uniform "stock" car racing I'm used to seeing. Both are cool, but these feel so unique.
did i miss a 2 stroke idea ?
As hinted at here, speed is a number, fast is a feeling. The required rate of thought processing is a big factor too. . It depends on the class and track of course, but typically things "come at you faster" in karts. Some of that is down to how close you are to the ground, but it's mostly down to literally the rate that turns come at you due to scale. I've found most cars feel relatively sedentary unit you get to wings and slicks in single seaters. At that a shifter kart on a tight track or a street course is about as assaultive on your body as you can get until you spend BIG money running cars.
Wait not take a racing version of vr38DETT v6 engine with the power cranked up. It’s a proven power monster on drag strips and isn’t as heavy as a twin turbo v8
>American SUV >drives past a McDonald's >>continuity 😂
100% ive been doing a arrive and drive kart program the last year and its a riot. I was 4 wide going down the front straight at my last race
That Subaru engine sound 🤢🤮
internal combustion engine was invented 160 years ago, now few hundreds of years!
If they're faster they render F1 irrelevant
No limmits? Easy, be a turbo supercharged 2 stroke. Way north of several thousand bhp in the volume
Why at the end did he say he’s gonna catch me?
you can call Prokarts (what I race in) professional but look at one race and have another go were all dumb.
Video starts at 07:43
"This car"? More like cart... 😂
And not even one mention of the LFA :( :(
My regular s65 has 6 piston calipers
Instead of using pistons to propel the fuel aft, they can use inflatables. The inflatables are powered by gas expansion, from a small gas bottle, that inflates the inflatable inside the fuel tanks. This also provides an emergency shut-off, just closing the gas input from the gas bottle. The inflatables can also be set to do back to front in emptying sequence, if that can help. Also, doing remote piloting for a test run will most certainly be more safe. Also the 'emergency brake' should be aft, not front, since you want to be able to steer, which would be prevented by such a brake, since it would lift the front wheels from the ground. I'd also suggest a sword shape, that would simply grind into the ground little by little as the tip would grind off.
Here’s a better explaination. They’ll probably add a rolls Royce jet engine😂
Brilliant title
Bro explained suspension dynamics of skin 😂
Then the sport might actually be interesting.
At 4:37 I thought the horizontal line was being draw diagonally for a moment. I didn't even realize that my brain had already compensated for the slant of the horizon!
Top fuel dragster is littlebit faster.
Interesting video! I actually get horribly motion sick and often throw up after 10 minutes of karting. Is this because of jerk? I’m fine on motorbikes so I was curious…
MO PAWAAA BABY
You forgot at least one major aspect. The incredibly short wheelbase makes the cart steering more responsive/twitchy. It also makes the time between bumps hitting the front and rear wheels quicker which you will perceive as speed.
car go burrrrrrrrrr!
Light is always better. But, a fan would drastically change the body and driving. You could carry much more speed around the corners and wouldn’t need as much power.
What this discussion of unlimited race cars showed me is that the driver will become the unmovable limiting factor in how fast a closed circuit car can be. You may be able to design a car that delivers 9g's of braking force, but can a human remain functional to endure that level of trauma on its brain 9 times a minute in traversing a race track circuit. That is to say nothing about the six g force that same human would immediately sustain in the corner after such harsh braking. It looks like the ultimate car would need to be an R/C racer instead of a manned car.
As interesting as the diesels were, they ruined prototype balancing and were kinda boring to watch compared to the petrol cars
Try a SuperKart... that's a MINIATURE FORMULA 1
Velocity is a vector. Velocity has a speed and a direction. You've confused velocity and acceleration. Acceleration is a ². You can have an initial velocity of 30m/s, and then have an acceleration of 2m/s². Every second you travel, you're increasing your velocity by 2m/s. You don't need a direction for acceleration.
My 3.6 VR6 Passat did the 0-62 in 5.2! Not all Passats are the same, jk ofc
There has to be one limitation in order for this to make sense: BTU limit. A fixed number of BTUs (energy) available, and do what you want, any type of engine.
There HAS to be a reason why helicopters use turbines instead of piston engines! Reliability? Power to weight? And, with no rules you could even use the exhaust gas to provie additional forward impulse and (with a variable nozzle) even downforce
Carts feel fast because your on a skate board with good tyres and a engine half the size of the bike you ride can't keep up with. And the steering wheel is the size of a orange. The latest sim wheel on Max force isn't that server.
Long term kart racer here (not hire karts), like any race vehicle when you get used to them they don't feel fast. These days I feel like they are slow, guess because I'm used to how they work, good kart control and used to the noise.
I think you mean 1898 not 1989
Looking interested in Bugatti's new V16 + Hybrid system approach, they could go balls to the wall into prototype development and smash the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo Norrdschlieffe record if they really wanted to imo
Racing karts seats are more like 20 mm than 50 mm off the ground
its also why motorbikes feel slow
Unfortunately DNF in a helicopter often has much worse consequences compared to a rally car... Terrible tragedy, RIP all four.
You have a very clear and easy to understand way of explaining complicated things, thank you for that.
I pull 2.4g in the corners. I started to wear carbon fibre body armour after twice tearing the cartilage between my ribs. No broken rigs.
Not too sure about that eye height, my Lexus RX SUV is 175cm tall overall and it's not a small one.
